The Whole Chile Pepper Book
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (September, 1990)
Author: Nancy Dave/Gerlach Dewitt
Average review score:

A wealth of pepper information and recipes
This book has everything for the pepper-lover. Not only some tasty and unique recipes, but also history, interesting pepper facts, and information about cultures throughout the world that enjoy peppers. Plus, many of the recipes are not blazing-hot. Even includes recipes from Africa and Asia for a change of pace. The "Field Guide to Chiles" (with some color photos) is also very interesting. Think of this as the Food Network meets the Discovery Channel.

As indispensible as salt
A total source book, everything one needs to know about chiles is here. Part science book, complete with botanical information, part history book with all the 411 on origins of the various chiles, but mostly a recipe book. The beauty of this book lies in the fact that exposure is given to the use of chile throughtout the world. Typically many think of the dishes of Mexico and it's southern neighbors as "hot" food, but this book shows the use of the chile in cuisines throughout the world. The interesting tidbits of information provided about how the chile came to be a part of the cuisine is most fascinating. Old world meets new world cuisines. Many of the recipes are tradional fares that can be found in other books but the truly exotic, different cuisine awaits those who have adventurous taste buds. In the mood for a little African soup? A simple enough recipe consisting mainly of peanut butter, chiles, chicken broth and the usual suspects of diced onions, carrots and oil and you're ready for a starter on your menu. An excellent book for someone looking to serve up some fiery worldly cuisine the book offers recipes on some of the most exotic dishes imagineable. A great book to be used over and over again, year after year, your friends will be impressed when you serve them up something yummy they have never tried before.

A great way to spice up your life!
For the devoted pepper aficionado, this book is all business. The book provides scores of delectable recipes and informs the reader of what makes up the chili pepper. A history lesson or two is included at no extra cost. The recipe for habanero paste is outstanding, especially on my favorite local pizza. Relocation to Pittsburgh is required for the pizza, sorry. Warning, the purchase of this book results in a better diet and a truly wise pepper consumer. You will be the center of attention at parties and the opposite sex will flock toward you in droves. O.K., I'm exaggerating you may just experience the state of Zen

The El Paso Chile Company Margarita Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Morrow Cookbooks (May, 1999)
Author: W. P. Kerr
Average review score:

Cheers
This book has it all - beautifully photographs, recipes that actually taste as good as they look, and a little education on tequila. I found myself wanting MORE recipes, but what is here is gold. The book itself is attractive, slim and well-made. It also will educate you on tequila, how to pick it, and what the differences are.

Although, as another reviewer said, it doesn't matter how good the book looks, it's how the recipes turn out. This book delivers, hands down. You'll be glad you bought it.

Can't Drink the Photos
However attractive the pics may be, you can't shake them up on ice and sip them while the sun slips into the Caribbean. The test of any cooking or drink book is in the tasting, and this is one tasty little volume indeed. Liquid (the best Mai Tai ever) or solid (French Toast Brulee), these recipes are keepers. The book's inexpensive enough--buy two and tuck the spare away in a cupboard, for when the first one is worn out.

Delightfully distilled wisdom, from an expert host.
After all the gushing about the photos -- okay, they're great -- somebody needs to point out how good the recipes are! Park Kerr offers a wealth of information, in an easy-to-read format. With guests literally walking through the door, I was able to whip up a huge batch of frozen margaritas with next to no effort -- one guest, who has some expertise in these matters, can't stop raving about them -- "By far the best I've ever had," he says. (Kerr's secret ingredients made all the difference.) As with all good cookbooks, this one gives you loads of tips and tricks that make a good recipe ten times more interesting and fun. You get clear explanations about the various grades of tequila, so there's no confusion when you're facing a dizzying array of bottles at the liquor store. All in all, a tight, concise, well-informed guide that is presented with real panache. It's the next best thing to crossing the bridge to Ciudad Juarez, headed for the Kentucky Club on a Friday night. Hats off to Park Kerr, and, yes, a tip of the lens cap to Duane Winfield.

Embarrassed Often, Ashamed Never
Published in Paperback by Autism Asperger Publishing Co (20 September, 2002)
Authors: Lisa B. Elliott and Penny Chiles
Average review score:

reader from Florida
Embarrassed Often Ashamed Never is an easy to read book. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down until I was finished. I found this book full of "human real life" stories that touched my heart. As I was reading I could picture in my mind just what was actually happening in the story she was telling. I appreciate the openess that Lisa and her family shared with us in the book. One of my friends that works with children in the school that have Asperger Syndrome recommend that I read the book so as a parent working in the school it would give me a better understanding of some of our special children. Now I try to look at situations through their eyes when I'm helping out at school. Everyone should read this book.

Poignant and Humurous
As a professional I feel this easy-to-read book provides insights into the everyday experiences of a family living with a child with autism spectrum disorder. Lisa invites the reader to take a glimpse into her family life by sharing poignant and humorous stories of their experiences. Through the experiences of her son, Clark, Lisa reminds is that although living with a child with autism spectrum disorder often leads to embarrassing moments, nobody ever needs to be ashamed. This enlightening book is a must read for parents, family members and professionals who live and work with individuals who have autism spectrum disorders

Humorous, yet indepth short stories on Autism/Asperger's
Lisa graciously invites us into her unique family life.
We learn about autism/asperger's through poignant and humorous short stories of their experiences.
This book amazingly manages to be light-hearted and indepth at the same time.
After reading this book I was better educated about autism spectrum disorders but NOT through doctors and text books but through the insights and strengths of one family dealing with Autism.
I highly recommend this uplifting book to everyone.

More than a guide !
Traveling is not a dream. Traveling is a need. Man, in state of nature, is an explorator. A traveler.
So begins Chile Experience, a very interesting and complete travel guide.
It's not an ordinary guide. At your bookshop's, you can find - you know, this kind of so-called guide which topics look like dictionary definitions... or books full of pictures, in which explanations are non-existent or so. Chile Experience includes both, and, moreover, it has been written by a Chile's lover, I guess.

From Atacama desert to Patagonian pampa, from Chile's climate to its history, this book involves the reader in the discovery of a culture, a country, a Nature whose riches we can hardly imagine.
The proverb says that traveling makes youth. Find a second youth in Chile - through this guide !

You'll be Pleasantly Surprised
Chile's very own publisher has finally produced and English language complement to their well established line of Chilean guide books and maps. Travel Guide: Chile Experience is much more than a guide book. It's a lesson in culture, history, flora, fauna, gastronomy and more!

Written by a man who has spent the better part of his adult life in Chile, this book offers a perspective of Chile no Andean traveler should be without. From history and flora to indigenous culture, architecture and adventure this book educates the reader, adding depth to hikes, tours and conversation.

With maps, precise explanations and well researched tour suggestions and contact information, this book also offers detailed and digestible information for travelers interested in adventure and remote locations.

Finally, with charts, topographical maps and satellite imagery, this book pulls ahead of the leading pack of travel guides. Apart from the flowing, easy-to-read writing style, the maps and excellent graphics truly make this book a must have.

Don't travel to Chile without this one!!
If you are a casual traveler, you might find something you weren't expecting. This is so complete, you'll find just what you're looking for. If you are an outdoor-adventure type, this is a must have for the time of your life. If you like history and architecture, you'll find it here. Chile, that skinny little country is full of fun and adventure. Josh Howell is the perfect guide.

Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii: A Call to the Soul: Planetary Crossroads and the Key to Our Future
Published in Paperback by Health Communications (October, 1995)
Authors: Pila of Hawaii, William "Pila" Chiles, Health Communications, Pila, and Pila Chiles
Average review score:

For the awakening Soul who is aware of Planetary change!!
At a time when all souls on the planet are awakening, this very special book invites your soul to sing and explore the secrets and mysteries of the universal force of power and energy that exists not only in Hawaii but deep within yourself as well. Withe Pila the "seer" as your expert guide, you will be taken on a journey of adventure and discovery. You will become a "kahuna" student of the secrets, and you will learn that the body of the Hawaiian islands can be thought of as a symbolic body of all levels of mind, body and spirit. To know Hawaii is to know yourself and the answer to the yearning of your soul. There is no greater spokesperson on the spirit of Hawaii than this man "Pila" Chiles. He is the Gatekeeper of the soul of Hawaii. Dr. P. Sunray, author/Director, Sunray Healing Haven & National Interfaith Seminary

Hauntingly soul stirring.
I just bought the book "Secrets & Mysteries of Hawaii" and have read it through once already. (Of course I'm going to read it again). I related to everything that the author said in this book -- I was 'initiated' on the Big Island 6 years ago (during the solar eclipse). I visited several spots of the Island, and got a respectful salutation from Madame Pele. I never got to encounter a kahuna while on the Island, but I had a mystical experience there

This Book is a Gem
So many wonderful reviews about this remarkable book in regards to its magic, depth and humor have already been written.
I can agree with every single word, any reviewer has stated, completely.
Thus I would like to point out another special passage of Pila's guidebook which turned out to be a very touching message for my personal life. The "Call to the Soul" stepped into my world coincidentally before I went to Kaua'i, Hawaii, in order to meet Goddess Pele.
Amongst so many lines full of marvellous depth there were also these two sentences, since then decorating the wall of my apartment, saying:
"And all along the way of life there were only the three things that counted. Something to do, something to look forward to, and the third one, that blessing, if it ever happens... someone to share it with."
Each soul has its own yearning, every person is seeking individual truth.
Many magic things happened since I read this book. And they led me eventually to Pila's personal "Akashic Life Path Readings" which definitely saved and changed my own life!
I will reread this book and return to Hawaii soon...

An Unfinished Song: The Life of Victor Jara
Published in Hardcover by Ticknor & Fields (April, 1984)
Author: Joan Jara
Average review score:

Very good, but 1998 update is even better
This is a well-written, highly personalized biography of Victor Jara, a great Chilean folksinger. However, in 1998 Joan Jara published an updated version of this book, which corrects a few minor errors and gives updates on Victor's legacy. This 1998 book can be found at various UK online booksellers, including amazon.co.uk.

This book should be more easily available!!
This is an incredible book about Victor Jara, the musician and activist in the Chilean struggle against fascism and imperialism, and his brutal murder by Pinochet and his forces. It is also a book about the people of Chile, and chronicles carefully their poverty as well as their amazing spirit. To the non-Chilean reader it provides an important account of the workings of imperialism. Joan Jara's book MUST be read as widely as possible. Why is it not available more easily in North America?! It is a very important book because of its relevance to modern day imperialism.

This is for you, Joan...
I tried to write to you so many times... I hope you could read my letter... Once I was in Madrid, in a bookstore, and your book just jumped right to my hands. Since then, your book stays near my bed (and I am talking about 15 years...), and turn to be part of my life. Thank you so much for the strenght, hope, the lesson for life you gave with your (and Victor`s) words and life story. I hope you found peace and forgiveness. We will never forget.

Pablo Neruda: Absence and Presence
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (September, 1990)
Authors: Luis Poirot and Alastair Reid
Average review score:

Pictorials of the Poet's home life
While this unique book could have used more of Neruda's poetry, the essays from friends who knew him well and the black and white photographs of his collection of homes and flotsam and jetsam antiques (mastheads, bottles and shells washed ashore, etc.) are proper tributes. These views/voices of his personal world shed light on the passions and ideas that ruled his writing.

There is purity and uncontrived artistry in his eccentric living places. I am in awe.

Amazing photographs and investigation
Luis Poirot is one of my favorites photographers. This book about Pablo Neruda is great, not only for the quality of the beatiful images, but also for the investigation with the people who knew Neruda well.
Absolutamente recomendable!!!!

deepful
I love looking at the pictures and reading his poetry. I also love knowing the little tidbits of information. I have been to his three houses in Chile that are pictured in this book. When I look through it I have this rush of emotions and a pleasant rememberance of being there.

Better Homes and Gardens 501 Quilt Blocks: A Treasury of Patterns for Patchwork & Applique
Published in Hardcover by Meredith Books (September, 1994)

Average review score:

501 Quilt Blocks not for the timid or new quilter
If you are into 4" blocks it is a treasury of patterns if you are an expert at applique this is for you. But if you are a beginner you might find this book a little lite on directions, for coping the block difficult. It is an excellant reference book for later ideas.

501 4 inch blocks to choose from here!
This book gives diagrams for 501 4 inch blocks and a few examples of how to make these into quilts. The 4 inch blocks cover traditional designs such as sawtooth, friendship star and attic windows, a wide variety of floral designs, sunbonnets, block for each month of the year, holiday themes, hearts, Christmas, Easter, Santas, Halloween, trees and leaves, birds and butterflies, building blocks, ships and planes, stars, baskets, alphabet, numerals, juvenile, cats, sewing and southwest inspired blocks.Simple instructions are provided. Many blocks lend themselves to foundation piecing.

So much to see, can't put it away
This is a good book to get inspired. Wonderfull just to look at all the patterns, some are difficult to make. I also use it when somebody mentions a block and I don't what they mean.

Painted Bodies: By Forty-Five Chilean Artists
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (October, 1996)
Author: Roberto Edwards
Average review score:

The Best
This collection of body paintings reveal incredible skill, and also lots of luscious ideas and provacative thoughts whether or not you have any special interest in Body Painting. Each model has been painted in unique ways which reflect the depth and richness of talent of each artist who painted them. Some take a whimsical approach, and others move in the world of political statements, and then there are those who really move off of this plain of existence into imaginary worlds of the spirit and the soul. This is book not only for body painters and make-up artists, the work here is for all of those interest in contemporary visual art, dance, costume, image, and more. In time, this art form will stand alone as a truly "new" form of cultural sculpture.

A must for the bodypainting lover
Painted Bodies is not a book to read in, but to look at. It includes a wonderful collection of 45 different artists, showing their own interpretation on the subject. The manner Roberto Edwards photographed them is the best compliment a body painter can expect. Above all, the marvellous layout makes the fantastic finishing touch to this great book. Absolutely recommended!

Beautiful
The pictures are creative and wonderful. This is a great book to sit back and enjoy if you enjoy looking at great art.

Chile
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Susan Roraff
Average review score:

That explains why..............
We lived with an Exchange Student from Chile this year. So many pages of this book had me thinking "So, that's why....." It answered many questions I didn't even know to ask.

A must for foreigners in Chile
As an anthropologist and long-time resident of Chile, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who plans to spend time here. In fact, I've made it required reading in a 'culture course' I teach for North American university students here in Chile. This book is not another travel guide, but rather an insightful and very accessible look into the intracacies of Chilean culture. A quick look through the table of contents shows its range of topics, and the Cultural Quiz at the end is a must!

An accurate and entertaining view of the Chilean "lifestyle"
I was very lucky to have the opportunity to read this book. Being a Chilean myself, it was very interesting to learn about the way foreigners see us, particularly after living in the US for a couple of years. It is impressive how accurate the facts are, and the way they are presented is quite entertaining. I was very surprised to know that the authors were not native Chilean. My American fiancé bought this book in an attempt to understand me better, gain knowledge about my country, and to lean about traditions and customs of my people and society. He could not have gotten something better for this purpose. I think he now understands more about many of the things I do or the way I am. He has never been in Chile (yet), but I think that after reading the book things will make more sense, and it is an excellent guide to the daily life in that part of the world. I would recommend to start reading another section different from chapter one, which is the most difficult to read, particularly for somebody who is not familiar with Chile, and is planning to go there.
